District 21 Medical Examiner Office

The following types of deaths must be reported to the District Medical Examiner:
| By criminal violence of any type; | |
| By accident of any type, including delayed deaths and deaths resulting from medical complications following an accident; | |
| By suicide; | |
| Suddenly while in apparent good health; | |
| Unattended by a practicing physician or other recognized practitioners*; | |
| In prison or penal institutions; | |
| In police custody; | |
| Under suspicious or unusual circumstances; | |
| By criminal abortion; | |
| By poison; | |
| By disease, injury or toxic agent resulting from employment; | |
| When a body is brought into the state without proper medical certification; | |
| When a body is to be cremated, dissected or buried at sea; | |
| By disease constituting a threat to public health. |
If a death falls outside of these circumstances the Medical Examiner will decline jurisdiction.
