To report a death, call (239) 277-5020 anytime day or night.

The following types of deaths must be reported to the District Medical Examiner:

By criminal violence of any type;
By accident of any type, including delayed deaths and deaths resulting from medical complications following an accident;
By suicide;
Suddenly while in apparent good health;
Unattended by a practicing physician or other recognized practitioners*;
In prison or penal institutions;
In police custody;
Under suspicious or unusual circumstances;
By criminal abortion;
By poison;
By disease, injury or toxic agent resulting from employment;
When a body is brought into the state without proper medical certification;
When a body is to be cremated, dissected or buried at sea;
By disease constituting a threat to public health.

If a death falls outside of these circumstances the Medical Examiner will decline jurisdiction.
